Yes – it’s true. Young people don’t like Facebook anymore. Facebook is no longer considered as cool. Think about it – would you like to be on a social media site where your pictures are going to be liked by your aunt and grandfather!

That’s so uncool, and in a way, Facebook is a victim of its own overwhelming popularity. There are more than 2 billion active Facebook users around the world. In India, that number comes to 225 million as of 2019.

So if Facebook is uncool, what’s the new cool?

Well, Instagram, of course. Instagram already has 72 million active users in India, and we are guessing most of them are young people – Gen Z and Millennials. Instagram is emerging as the Facebook for Young People, where young men and women hang out.

Millennials and Gen Z are the biggest users of Instagram across the world. This is especially so in the United States, where 72% of teens said that that were active on Instagram. That’s massive!

By Millennials, we are referring to those born between 1981 and 1996 and by Gen Z, we refer to those born after 1996. Both generations – especially Gen Z – have grown up on the social media and the internet and have a high degree of comfort with new age technologies.

They are happy to try out new and exciting things, and Instagram appears to be particularly popular with them.
In India, the findings of a recent YouGov-Mint Millennial Survey were fascinating. More than 5,000 young people took part in this survey from over 180 cities across the country.

They were specially asked about their favorite social media sites, and guess what – Instagram figures high on the list. Instagram is hugely popular, especially in the metros – in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore.

Young Indians – especially the urban youth – no longer like Facebook that much. No, they are not deleting their Facebook app as yet, but they are not as actively engaged on Facebook as their counterparts from 10 years ago.

There is a strong preference for Instagram among the young. Why? That’s easy to explain.

Young people like the visual and informal nature of Instagram. They don’t like boring posts on politics and social issues – like we have on Facebook these days.

Young people want to be entertained and just chill out with friends of their age. They don’t want to be monitored by older people, and they certainly don’t want their parents watching them as they flirt with attractive members of the opposite gender!

Also, young people tend to have narcissistic tendencies. You have no doubt noticed how young women try for hours to get the perfect selfie and post that on Instagram.

Instagram is all about projecting and attractive image of yourself to the world. It is also about following beautiful people – actors, celebrities and professional athletes over whom you probably have a crush on.

But yes….

You will need a way to download all those attractive pictures you see on Instagram on your smartphone and convert them into full-size. You will need an app like Wooper for that.

Wooper is an Instagram app that allows you to download photos, videos and full-size Instagram DPs. You can now save photos, videos and DPs from your favorite Instagram pages on your smartphone as full-sized wallpapers and repost with a single tap.
