Gully Boy

Indians have a skewed idea about the art and musical genre of rap, all thanks to “rap-stars” like Yo Yo Honey Singh, Baadshah, and more. Rap for us is all about girls, money, and booze. However, the genre of rap could not have been more different. Rap is about the streets, verse, rhythm, and communication, and it seems that finally, someone (read Zoya Akhtar and team) is throwing light on “asli hip-hop” in India.

Both the trailer announcement and the trailer itself of Gully Boy were intriguing, gritty, humane, and music to the ears of rap lovers and film enthusiasts alike. The film is inspired by the life story of Mumbai underground rappers Divine (Vivian Fernandes) and Naezy (Naved Shaikh) and their ascent to popularity from the streets. Apart from that, this film will give the audience an in-depth look into the lives of Mumbai’s underground rappers and how different the songs and verses are from the “raps” we are used to hearing in mainstream Bollywood movies.

The uber-talented Ranveer Singh once again tones down his massive energy (after Lootera) to get into the character of the protagonist of Gully Boy, while Alia Bhatt essays the role of Saifeena, a feisty to-be doctor, and the love interest of Ranveer Singh. Unlike other movie trailers, Gully Boy starts, continues, and ends with raps, with very little one-liners strewn in between. Ranveer Singh looks like an effortless rapper from the slums of Mumbai. Zoya Akhtar dons the director’s cap once again after a hiatus of four years (her last film was Dil Dhadkne Do).

The trailer shows Ranveer Singh hailing from an underprivileged background, who raps to express himself. Hailing from the lower stratas of society and dealing with an abusive father, played by Vijay Raaz, he is told again and again not to dream big. However, Ranveer’s character lives by his motto of “apna time aayega”.

The film also stars Kalki Koechlin, Siddharth Chaturvedi, Vijay Razz, Akash Thosar, and Vijay Varma and will be released in India on February 14, 2019, after premiering at the 69th Berlin Film Festival.
