Instagram India Stats

The secret is out – Nobody likes Facebook anymore. Instagram is the new Facebook. Facebook, you can say, is a victim of its own success.

In India, everyone is on Facebook – not just your friend or boyfriend, but also your teacher and grandmother. That’s awkward, right?

Yeah, that’s why so many young people in India are looking at Instagram these days. Instagram is the “new cool” – just as Facebook was about 10 years back.

Yes, Instagram is also a part of Facebook and is independently valued at $100 billion. So whether you’re on Facebook or Instagram, or for that matter on WhatsApp, Mark Zuckerberg makes money!

The Instagram India Stats 2019 are interesting. At the time of this writing – January 2019 – there are 72 million active Instagram users in India. India is only second to the United States when it comes to the number of active Instagram users. The U.S. has 121 million Instagram users, but we expect India to surpass that soon, given how popular Instagram has got there, especially with young people.

Indeed, India is one of the most important companies for Facebook Inc., which owns Instagram. Facebook made a record $980 million from digital advertising revenues in India in 2018, just below Google, which made over $1 billion.

Facebook and Google account for over 70 percent of India’s digital advertising space. As of today, Instagram accounts for 10 percent of Facebook’s business in India, with revenue of $70 million in 2018.

Instagram has 72 million active users in the country compared to Facebook’s 225 million. The difference is that Instagram is on the up while Facebook’s growth is stagnating. Instagram’s growth is at the expense of Facebook, which means that this social media site is effectively cannibalizing Facebook in India, as it is in the rest of the world.

This is, in fact, true everywhere. Consider this Pew Research Center survey which shows that a majority of teens in the United States prefer to use either Instagram, Snapchat or YouTube to Facebook. 72% of the teens in the United States said they used Instagram regularly in 2018, compared to 52% in the earlier year.

What’s happening in the US is reflected in user behavior in India as well. Younger Indians, especially teens and young women, prefer Instagram over any other social media site.

Why?

It could be because of the visual nature of the medium. More pictures, more videos and less text. Nobody likes boring text these days.

Also, people are fed up of all the political content on Facebook and Twitter and want something different from that, where they can focus on the beautiful things in life (and beautiful people!)

Speaking of which…

You know what’s the main issue with Instagram? You see all the lovely pictures on Instagram on your smartphone, but if you want to download them or convert them into full-size, it’s not so easy. You need an app for that.
